About Our Churches

The House of God emerged in the Pentecostal movement era that began in the early 1900's. It traces its organization roots to 1914, when the Bishop Rufus Abraham Reed Johnson founded the church and later chartered it in Washington, D.C. From its inception the church was Sabbitarian but later grew to accept the observance of the Holy Days, clean diet, and the recognition of the Sacred Name.

The House of God is currently headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky and the Apostle James E. Embry Jr. serves as its chief prelate. The basic governmental structure of the House of God is Presbyterian with local churches being semi-autonomous. The congregation elects its leaders, owns its property, determines its budget, establishes its membership, and conducts all necessary business attendant to the local church. Pastor's of local congregations can be appointed by District Superintendents or recommended by local congregations. In any event, appointments to pastoral positions are reviewed and approved by the Divisional Superintendent once qualifications are determined to have been met. The appropriate license and/or appointment certificates are issued by the General Secretary.
